This weeks 30 Second Interview with actor and author, Stephen Collins swept me back to the 1980′s and a programme I absolutely loved; Tales of the Gold Monkey. (See interview here).

Well, it got me thinking of all the other ‘stuff’ I loved about the eighties. And, apart from the wild hair style I laquered to death, the eighties was one of the best decades of my life.

Okay, so I wore white stilletoe heels to the disco, and danced around my handbag….but, who didn’t?

So, here’s what I loved most about the 1980′s:

WHAM!
I even had a pair of luminous gloves like George Michael wore in the ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go Go’ video. I also remember one of the national newspapers selling a ‘YOG’ ring. It was a nickname of George’s when he was a child. He apparently wore an identical ring….and therefore, so did I – all for £4.99. The metal blackend within two weeks.

Spectrum Computer

Remember how you had to ‘load’ the games via cassette tape. You’d listen to two minutes of high pitch squealing, then an error would occur. After fiddling with the volume, you’d start again; just to play games like ‘Jet Set Willy’, ‘Pajamarama’, and ‘Booty’. Happy times.

Madonna
I had the lace gloves, the studded belt, cut off leggins, net hair band, bangles, crosses hanging around my neck. I was Madonna…..until my mum refused to let me out of the house until I changed my clothes. Please tell me I wasn’t the only one.

Michael J. Fox
The funny thing about this film is that I never really wanted to see ’Back to the Future’. A friend kept going on and on about the actor being gorgeous - she watched Michael religiously in ‘Family Ties’ - so, evenutally, I agreed to go to the cinema. That first scene, after Marty McFly is catapulted across Doc Browns room, I thought, “Yuck!”

By the end of the film, I was in love with Michael J. Fox. Still am a bit.

Eighties Television
I loved television programmes in the eighties. They were all cop and mystery shows. CHiPS, Hunter, Hart to Hart, and of course, Tales of the Gold Monkey. My favorite though was Dempsey and Makepeace; more so because of Michael Brandon. I even joined their fan club. The show was shot in and around London. I found out where one of the episodes had been filmed and…….oh dear, I do like to embarass myself.

Rubix Cube

I wasted hours and days of my life trying to figure this square out. In the end I just moved the stickers about.

So, that’s pretty much how I spent the 1980′s. How did you spend yours? And I want to hear all the embarassing details.

James Lipton and the Actors Studio did it for fun with the actors…..Now, I’m doing it for fun with the writers.

I’m excited.

Why?

Because this 30 Second Interview has a special place in my heart.

Stephen Collins is such an accomplished man, I hardly know where to begin….so, I’ll start at the beginning and whizz through to one of my favorites; Tales of the Gold Monkey.

In 1880, Greenback Party presidential candidate and the 1892 Populist Party (“People’s Party”) candidate for president, General James Baird Weaver would, some 67 years later, become a great-great-grandad.

Born  in 1947  in Des Moines, Iowa and raised in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, Stephen Weaver Collins was the youngest of three brothers and an extremely shy child.

Stephen’s first love was baseball. He would later go on to get a high school batting average of 143. Then, with the Star Trek softball team, 301. But neither this, nor his love for music (he played bass guitar and rhythm guitar in a number of rock and roll bands), could deter the acting ‘bug’.

Stephen took to the stage and, with an acting award for his portrayal of Kilroy in “Camino Real“, was offered the small role of Valentine in “Twelfth Night“. Stephen graduated College an employed actor.

With approximately 25 years of theatre productions under his belt, and at 27 years of age, television knocked on Stephen’s door with The Michele Lee Show. He has never looked back .

After much success with hit shows such as Charlies Angles, The Waltons, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Stephen landed the lead role of pilot Jake Cutter in Tales of the Gold Monkey. Set in 1938, the story revolved around a pilot who finds adventure while transporting cargo in his well-worn airplain, the Grumman Goose…..and in case you hadn’t noticed, is a massive favorite of mine.

But others may know Stephen more as Rev. Eric Camden from TV’s 7th Heaven, which ran for eleven seasons, until finishing in 2007.

To date, Stephen’s acting career has earned him many awards, including his portrayal of John F Kennedy in the miniseries  A Woman Named Jackie. He also has several directing credits to his name.

As an author, Stephen has written two novels. In 1994, Eye Contact was published by Bantam Press. This success was followed by Double Exposure in 1998, which was published by William Morrow.

In 2006 OttoPenzler’s Mysterious Books, an imprint of Warner Books, published Stephen’s ‘Water Hazard‘ as part of a short story mystery anthology, Murder in the Rough.
So, a musician, songwriter, actor, novelist, director, and poker player who qualified for the first tournament of Celebrity Poker Showdown in 2005….. I bet this 30 second interview has, by far, been the most challenging of Stephen’s life.

1.  What is your favorite word?  Yes

2. What is your least favorite word?   “Whatever” (used to stop a conversation)

3. What turns you on?   Humor

4. What turns you off?   Unwillingness to consider a different opinion

5. What sound do you love?   The sound of the crowd in the background of a baseball game on the radio

6. What sound do you hate?  Whining (especially my own)

7. What is your favorite curse word?   ”Fuck.”

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?   The Law

9.  What profession would you not like to do?  Work for Monsanto

10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?   ”Surprise!”

Looking for Experienced Writer to Collaborate on Script
I am a film maker trying to put a story together for my new short film “Love on the Dance Floor.” I am looking only for an experienced writer to collaborate on the script. New York Film Academy producer seeks original horror or fantasy screenplays for potential production. Which package will include a business plan, a look book, a budget, a schedule, and a marketing and distribution plan. Looking for Drama/Comedy Screenwriters for Feature Film Script
Director/Producer looking for a great writer in the drama/comedy genre to collaborate on a feature film script. The subject involves a struggling band set in LA during the 1970s. The film would be a “Bottlerocket” meets “Almost Famous” meets “Spinal Tap.” For more information write to Brandon LaGankea at brandonlaganke@gmail.com.

Looking for Character Driven Short Scripts
I am a director/producer searching for a simple 5-10 minute script. More than anything, I am looking for a character driven piece with no more than 3 locations, containing 2-4 characters. My preferred genre for the script is either comedy, drama, horror, crime or action. The reason for this is because the big budget FX of science fiction or fantasy are way out of my budget. My desired script would be a strong dialogue driven comedy/drama, but I will consider any crime, horror or action stories depending on what FX they require. As long as the FX occur on-screen and do not break the bank too much then I will consider your script. If you are based in or close to Manchester then that is a plus but don’t worry too much if you aren’t. Please e-mail your scripts to jonnycof@hotmail.com.

Looking for Gritty, Original British Short Scripts
Independent Filmmaker requiring original Short Films Scripts (Up to 20 mins long) to be made on a low/no budget basis. I am looking for Gritty British scripts of any genre that contain: Minimal characters (2-5); Minimal dialogue; Only a handful of locations; Gritty themes (Love, sex, loss…etc) Low budget scripts only – you must know a rough estimate of how much your script would cost to make, so please only send your script if you think it could be made for practically nothing. The film will be shot on a Canon 550D camera and edited on Final Cut Pro. Please send formatted scripts and story breakdowns via email to filmprojectuk@gmx.com and we will get back to you with further details.

We have an immediate opening for an experienced co-writer to become part of the development process and work with the director/producer and his writing partner. Will offer equity for the right person, possible stipend upon funding.
If you have a great sense for structure and are a team player, we invite you to help us combining the best ideas into a great story before we write the scenes. The shoot and story is based in NYC, the genre is action/comedy/drama; and it features skateboarding, stunts, teen slang, hacking, gadgets and MAVs. Please send your links/info to nospa3-00@yahoo com.

Please remember to check out legitimacy of all contests before you enter and to copyright all work.

As it’s only eight days until Christmas, I thought I’d tell you a little story.

…….No, it’s not the one about the little boy born in a barn.

Way, way back, when portable music played on a Walkman and Atari’s Space Invaders topped the computer charts, a group of children went to a party. But, this was no ordinary party. No, this was a Christmas Eve party.

The children ran around like lunatics, while their parents danced the night away. Eventually, after huge amounts of Coca Cola and too many mince pies, the children tired and headed to bed, exhausted.

But this was Christmas Eve. These children couldn’t sleep. Besides, they wouldn’t willingly go to sleep for their parents on a normal day, there was no way tonight would be any different.

As they lay there, not mucking about, they heard it. The jingle of bells. Faint at first, but then louder. Father Christmas was here!

The children rushed to the window and stared at the dark sky. They couldn’t see him, but they knew he was there. The sound of the sleigh, high above the roof tops.

And, in case you are wondering, all the children went to sleep after that.

So, this is a memory I always think of when Father Christmas is mentioned – Yes, I was one of those children.

What are your favorite memories of Christmas? Have you ever heard or seen Santa? Do you believe in Father Christmas? Come on, tell me those stories.

If you want more of me, I can be found on FacebookTwitter, Google+ and Linkedin

James Lipton and the Actors Studio did it for fun with the actors…..Now, I’m doing it for fun with the writers.

Hold the phone!
This cannot be true.
Ryne Douglas Pearson, writer extraordinare, has never tasted strawberry ice cream? *Shudders at the thought.*
Californian Ryne, who once claimed the most fun job he’d ever had was when he worked as a plumber, married into a large Irish Catholic family. A practicing Catholic himself, Ryne is not only well known for his novels, he is also recognised in the movie industry.
Novels Cloudburst, October’s Ghost, Capitol PunishmentTop Ten, The Donzerly Light, All For One, and Confessions have confirmed his status as being a great author. But when novel Simple Simon was picked up by Hollywood and turned into the 1996 hit movie Mercury Rising, starring Bruce Willis, it opened another door for his writing.
In 2008, Ryne worked (uncredited) on scripts for Keanu Reeves movie, The Day Earth Stood Still  and Jessica Alba’s  The Eye, and in 2009, he was one of four writers who wrote the screenplay Knowing, a concept he himself created.
Although first frowned upon by the critics (what do they know?), Knowing went straight to number one at the box office. American film critic and screenwriter, Roger Ebert boasted it being one of the best sci-fi films he had ever seen. Knowing went on to make more than $180 million worldwide.
Ryne is a member of Writers Guild of America-WestScience Fiction & Fantasy Writers Of America and International Thriller Writers. When not writing or spendng time with his wife, children, and two dogs – a Doberman Shepherd and Beagle Vizsla, you can find him twittering with friends.
So what would a man, who is described by Entertainment Weekly as having a ‘sweet, disarming quality’ make of our ten questions?
1 .  What is your favorite word?  Hello
2. What is your least favorite word?   Stupid
3. What turns you on?   Fishing
4. What turns you off?   Guano
5. What sound do you love?   Laughter
6. What sound do you hate?   Whining
7. What is your favorite curse word?   Crapweasel
8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?   Chef
9.  What profession would you not like to do?  Doctor
10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?   You’re Late.

Passive voice. It’s proving to be a ball and chain for writers new to the fiction game. In fact, it remains a problem for some of the more ’experienced’ authors, too. I should know - I was one of them.

So, what exactly does passive voice and active voice mean?

Basically, writing in ‘passive’ voice not only sounds awkward, it means more words are needed to make your sentence. Active’ voice, on the other hand is clear and will keep your writing tight.

But how can I tell the difference between the two?

When writing in active voice, the subject is doing the action to the object (and no rude comments please – Nigel). For example:

“Tracey made the bed” is active. Tracy (subject) made (doing the action) the bed (object).

“The bed was made by Tracy” is passive. The bed now becomes the subject and the focus of the sentence, but it isn’t doing anything. It has now become the recipient as it’s being made by Tracy. The whole sentence is reversed.

Another example, and one I love, is:

“The door was kicked in by the officers.” This is passive writing. We have our subject (the door) not doing anything but being on the receiving end of the officers boot. Wouldn’t it sound better if it was worded, “The officers kicked in the door”? – Subject (officers) doing the action (kicked) to the object (door).

Get a post stick note and write SUBJECT is DOING THE ACTION to the OBJECT.  Now pin it to your computer

So is passive writing a big ‘no-no’?

‘Hell No!’….if you are a politicians or news reader and don’t want relay certain information to their public, either because you don’t know it or you are just secretive.

But, as we are talking fiction writing, my answer would have to be a ‘Hell Yes!’ It is a sure way and agent or publisher can tell if you are a novice writer or not.

But how do I know if I am writing passively?

Well, look at your sentence. First, is your subject doing the action? Have you mentioned the object?

Another indication that you are writing passively is your choice of words. Was, were, are, is, am, being, been all denote passive writing. Also, how many words do you have ending in ‘ing’? Too many I bet.

‘Water was poured into the jar.’ – ‘Jessie poured water into jar.’
‘The bone was being eaten by the dog.’ – ‘The dog ate the bone.’

I was a classic passive novelist when I first started writing. I had a friend point it out to me and voila. Now I’m an active girl. If you stick to SUBJECT – DOING ACTION – OBJECT, and watch your verbs, you’ll be fine.

Trust me :)

So, are you a passive writer or an active writer? Did you even notice you were writing in passive voice? Do you have any other tips for new writers? Let me know your thoughts….you know I like to chat.

If you want more of me, I can be found on FacebookTwitter, Google+ and Linkedin

James Lipton and the Actors Studio did it for fun with the actors…..Now, I’m doing it for fun with the writers.

Writer by Day, Hocky mom by night….

That perfectly sums up Jennifer Talty, or Jenni Holbrook as some of you may know her.

A creative New Yorker, Jenni liked to spend (some) of her teenage years on Lake George. Like most writers, she loved stories and would often show and tell them through the organisation of neighbourhood shows.

But where did her fascination with the darker side of human nature come from? Well, growing up in Rochester may have something to do with it. A city with one of the highest murder rates in the entire state, and home to the likes of The Alphabet Murders, The Genesee River Killer, The Murder of Kali Ann Poulton, and the bizzare case of a Funeral home that stole body parts from corpses awaiting cremation, it now seems obvious she would write for the thriller genre.

But writing was to take a back seat as the lure of Nazareth College and a Business Education degree beckoned. With a few years inside the world of Marketing, and teaching Business Applications at both High School Level and in Continuing Education under her belt, plus training product and sales employees for companies such as 3Comm, HP, and Mcafee, Jenni still felt restless and couldn’t shake her desire to write.

Then finally, while visiting Owasco Lake, Jenni began to write. And write she did; creating one page-turning romantic suspense novel after another; each one with a dark villain to wreck havoc on the hero and heroine.

With novels such as Rekindled, Jane Doe’s Return, Dark Water, and
In Two Weeks, and the many writing conferences and workshops she attends across the country, you’d think there was little time for anything else. Think again. Jenni also co-created Who Dares Wins Publishing with NY Times Best-Selling Author Bob Mayer, and Write It Forward workshops.

Today, Jennifer lives in Western NY with her husband and her three children. When she’s not carting her kids from one hockey rink to the next, she can be found in her ‘cave’ crafting her next Romantic Suspense novel.

So, what would a soccer mum make of our ten questions?

1.  What is your favorite word?  Friendship

2. What is your least favorite word?   Rape

3. What turns you on?   Kindness

4. What turns you off?   Narcisism

5. What sound do you love?   Water

6. What sound do you hate?   Sirens

7. What is your favorite curse word?   Fudge-a-muffin

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?   None

9.  What profession would you not like to do?  Doctor

10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?   Good timing
