James Lipton and the Actors Studio did it for fun with the actors…..Now, I’m doing it for fun with the writers.

Okay, we’ve all heard Sting singing about ‘An Englishman in New York’. Well, todays 30 Second Interview is about an American Gal in London.

Born in Pennsylvania and raised in Los Angeles, Lorelei King always planned to move to Paris. But in 1981, she came to London on what should have been a three-day stop over, and never left. She’s now married to actor Vincent Marzello.

So, lets start with Lorelei, the Actress.

With  films such as ‘Notting Hill’ and ‘The Saint’, Lorelei can boast having worked with some of the best male actors around on both the small and big screen; from the handsome Hugh Grant to the rugged Bob the Builder. In fact, Lorelei has starred with one of my all time favorites, Michael Douglas in the wonderful movie, ‘Shining Through’. Now I’m jealous.

And Television is not to be ignored. Emmerdale, Cold Feet, and Jonathan Creek, to name just a few, can all brag Lorelei as part of their cast at one time or another.

Now, what about Lorelei the voice over actress?

Well, if you live in America and watch Bob the Builder, you may just recognise the voice of ‘Wendy’ and ‘Packer’.

And let’s not get into the two hundred plus programmes Lorelei’s recorded for the BBC.  In fact, Lorelei has been described as ‘the best known American voice on radio 4’ after working on shows including Judge Dredd, Batman, and the classic American drama East of Eden.

As well at this, Lorelei also lends her multi award-winning voice to narrating audiobooks for best-selling authors Janet Evanovich, Sue Grafton and Patricia Cornwell.

And this leads us nicely to Lorelei, the Multi Award Winning Voice.

With numerous awards including Audiofile’s ‘Best Voices’, APA Performer of the Year, and Audiofile Golden Earphones Award among the twenty or thirty trophies already fighting for space on her mantle, Lorelei recently won lNarrator of the Year and firmly established herself as the best narrator around.

So, what of Lorelei the writer?

Lorelei is credited for writing children’s programmes Chuggington, for which she is also script editor, Bob the Builder and Fantomcat. Plus, the Playstation video game Mothatruckas 1 and 2, and Cartoon Network’s Dexter’s Laboratory Video Game.

Phew. Is it time to catch a breath? No. Because Lorelei is also co-owner of Creative Content Ltd, a small digital publishing company (check out their blog).

Now you can catch a breath while you read Lorelei’s 30 Second Interview.

1.  What is your favorite word?  Courage

2. What is your least favorite word? Guts

3. What turns you on?   Intelligence

4. What turns you off?    Pretension

5. What sound do you love?   The pop of the champagne cork

6. What sound do you hate? The crack-fizz of a pull tab

7. What is your favorite curse word?   Bollocks

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?   Professional ice skater

9.  What profession would you not like to do?  Social worker

10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates? “First class to the left”

James Lipton and the Actors Studio did it for fun with the actors…..Now, I’m doing it for fun with the writers.

What does Spitting Image, Have I Got News For You, Miranda, and Al Murray’s Happy Hour all have in common?

Answer: Comedy writer, Paul Powell.

With a Chelmsford education behind him, Paul began writing while studying Engligh at Oxford University. In 1991 he appeared in the Oxford Review and from then on in, was smitten with the written word. Radio Four’s ‘Weekending’ gave Paul his first writing job, where he rubbed shoulders with Ben Millar, Al Murray, and Harry Hill.

Since then, Paul has notched up quite a resume, working on some of the best and well-loved comedies on the box. Shows such as Minute to Win It, Miranda, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Top Gear, Hell’s Kitchen, and Dead Ringers have all had the golden touch of Paul’s humorous imagination. And stars such as Ant and Dec, Granham Norton, Bradley Walsh, Paul Merton, and Girls Aloud have all worked with him.

In fact, Paul’s comedy skills are so good, he has even reached the dizzy heights of Hollywood, working alongside the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Will Smith, Jada Pinkett, and very recently, Barry Manilow on ‘An Audience With…’. He even happily admits to cornering Buzz Aldrin at London Studios.

And it doesn’t stop there. Paul has won awards….. and lots of them. He picked up a Comedy Award for Al Murray’s Happy Hour, an RTS award for Miranda, starring the brilliant Miranda Hart, and the title of 39th Greatest Comedy Sketch for ‘Saying Goodbye’ from Smack The Pony.

As well as writing for television, Paul has also written numerous shows for Radio, and he is so passionate about his writing, he even starred in one of his own TV shows, Stuff the week.

Oh, and he’s also a non-executive director of Author’s Licensing and Collection Society, an excellent organisation which was formed to protect the rights of writers. And, there’s more…. he co-owns his own production company, Black Dog Television, with Dan Gastor and Will Ing.

So, when he’s not at the BBC, or out lunching with women who want a 30 Second Interview, what does Paul get up to? He hangs out at his local coffee shop and co-writes best-selling books: i.e. ‘Top Gear: Alternative Highway Code’, and ‘The Vicar of Dibley’.

Phew. The man’s a writing machine!

His new show ‘Alexander Armstrong’s Big Ask’ starts Monday 6th February at 9pm on Dave. Don’t miss it!

So what could this man, who’s engaged in a pepper growing race with me, have to say for himself?

1.  What is your favorite word?  Louche

2. What is your least favorite word? Chillax

3. What turns you on?   Wife

4. What turns you off?    Cynicism

5. What sound do you love?   Glug

6. What sound do you hate? Sniffing

7. What is your favorite curse word?   Arse

8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?   Musician

9.  What profession would you not like to do?  Undertaker

10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?   ”High-Five.”

Looking for Character Driven Short Scripts
I am a director/producer searching for a simple 5-10 minute script. More than anything, I am looking for a character driven piece with no more than 3 locations, containing 2-4 characters. My preferred genre for the script is either comedy, drama, horror, crime or action. The reason for this is because the big budget FX of science fiction or fantasy are way out of my budget. My desired script would be a strong dialogue driven comedy/drama, but I will consider any crime, horror or action stories depending on what FX they require. As long as the FX occur on-screen and do not break the bank too much then I will consider your script. If you are based in or close to Manchester then that is a plus but don’t worry too much if you aren’t. Please e-mail your scripts to jonnycof@hotmail.com.

Looking for Gritty, Original British Short Scripts

The film will be shot on a Canon 550D camera and edited on Final Cut Pro. Please send formatted scripts and story breakdowns via email to filmprojectuk@gmx.com and we will get back to you with further details.

BBC WRITING OPPORTUNITIES:

BBC Radio 4: Opening Lines

The BBC Radio Drama Readings Unit welcomes unsolicited submissions from writers new to radio for their annual series, Opening Lines which is broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

As well as broadcasting the three strongest stories in the summer of 2012 they will be publishing transcripts of the shortlisted stories on a new Opening Lines webpage.

The next window for sending in material is October 17th – December 2nd, 2011.  Stories submitted outside this time-frame will be returned unread.  Your story will be read and responded to within three months of the submission deadline.

Content and format:

They are looking for original short stories which work being read out loud i.e. with a strong emphasis on narrative and avoiding too much dialogue, character description and digression.  Pay particular attention to how the story opens and closes.  They’ll be looking to see whether the beginning of a story successfully links to how it ends.

The Readings Unit are interested in seeing stories which cover a broad range of subject-matter but material which explores particularly dark, harrowing themes is not best suited to Opening Lines.

The BBC has a rigorous taste and decency policy and cannot accept stories of a sexist or racist nature, or those which use the stronger swear words. The time allotted for each story is around 14 minutes, which means stories must be between 1,900 and 2,000 words in length.

Submissions must be typed and double-spaced on A4 paper and it is important to put your name and address on the script itself.  Please do not send a recording of the text.

Submission details:

When submitting your work, please include a SAE and a brief covering letter giving your name, e-mail address (if applicable), the story’s title, word count and details of writing track record. We regret that we can only accept one submission per writer and if we intend to broadcast your story we shall contact you.

Stories that fall outside these guidelines will be returned unread.

Please send us a copy of your story, not your original work.

If you would like to submit work to the London office please send it to:

BBC Radio Drama Readings Unit
Room 807, South East Wing
Bush House
Aldwych
London
WC2B 4PH

Deadline: December 2nd 2011

I didn’t have to think hard about what to blog about this week. If anyone has had access to a television or newspaper over the last couple of days, you will have seen the horrific images of London in turmoil.

So, what kicked it off?

Well, originally it was linked to an incident which occurred on Saturday in Tottenham, when police shot and killed an armed drug dealer. A quiet protest was held by the victim’s family….and then all hell broke loose.

By Saturday evening, shops in Tottenham were being looted with one newspaper reporting, “Youths broke into MacDonald’s and started cooking their own hamburgers.” I think this statement sums up the intelligence of the Neanderthal’s involved.

The first I heard about the trouble was on Sunday when my hubby saw the news feed on his phone. And, if I am completely honest, the only reason we were remotely interested in reading more was because my hubby grew up in Walthamstow, which is only miles from Tottenham. It isn’t the first time youths have caused trouble in this area and I’m sure it won’t be the last. By Sunday night, we were aware the trouble had reached Walthamstow, but were unprepared for what happened the following evening.

The BBC reported that Monday’s violence began when police stopped and searched a man in Hackney. Nothing was found and the man was allowed on his way. Then, later in the afternoon, groups of people started throwing stones, and a bin, at police officers.

I returned home Monday evening after an meal out with friends. We began discussing the trouble Tottenham and Walthamstow had seen over the weekend and decided to see if there were any new updates. We switched on the television……..and sat in stunned silence. Buildings were ablaze, shops were being looted. Rioters were fighting with police. It looked like a war zone. The only time we spoke was when police steamed after the gangs – for that we cheered…loudly.

Throughout the evening, the trouble escalated to Clapham, Hackney, Lewisham, Ealing…..Everywhere. It even reached Ilford and Romford, which was way too close for my liking; My Dad and sister live nearby.

In front of my eyes, a building burned until it was nothing but a shell. Shop owners where robbed, and our under staffed police force could do nothing to help them. Teenagers picked up metal fencing and lobbed it at security shutters that protected the shops inventory inside. Police cars and fire engines had windscreens smashed. How could this happen?

I was at my friends, in Romford, early the following morning. Her house overlooks the London sky line, and unfortunately the eerie reminder of  the buildings and cars destroyed by fire.

Last night saw local residents take a stand against crime and the trouble makers thinking they had a right to commit it. Walking the streets, these remarkable people protected their friends and family, properties, and businesses. The result saw hardly any trouble in London. However, the rioting escalated further north of the country in Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham.

Unfortunately, three people died when they were purposely mowed down. One man arrived on the scene and instinctively tried to help the victims. Someone then told him his own son was lying behind him. Covered in blood, this father immediately started CPR. His son unfortunately died. These three men were just trying to protect what was theirs and our thoughts and prayers are with their families today.

But why are people doing this?

There have been many comments from the youths and rioters – none of which I feel remotely sorry for. One youth, his face covered by a bandana, said: “I’m here for money and cause the police nick you for stupid things. This is payback. They (police) can’t do nothing.” And this is a spokesman? Doesn’t really put forward a very good case, does he?

One youth who, while expressing he in no way condoned what had been going on, tried to rationalise it. “It is wrong, but they (rioters) are trying to make money cause they can’t get to college. It’s showing everyone’s frustration. No one has a future.”

What amazes me is that this barbaric behaviour is being put down to the economic status of this country. ‘Youths don’t have a voice’ and ‘People want money and are frustrated.’ It makes me sick. We’ve all been down on our luck at times, and all felt the depression and stress that brings….but not once have I ever considered going out, robbing a shop, burning down an entire building, and throwing a brick at a copper. There is absolutely no excuse for this!

The public are screaming for the rioters parents to be brought to account. Well, I hate to break it to you but, knowing some of the areas these youths derive from, the parents probably sent their children out armed with a crowbar and an list of things to steal.

And to add insult to injury, we now have Germany taking advantage of the situation by comparing London to the Capital of Samalia. And many other nations, including Australia are saying we shouldn’t be holding the 2012 Olympics. Hey, why not just stick a barb wire fence around our shorelines and be done with it?

And today?

So far, over 400 people have been arrested and today saw some very busy courts. It makes my blood boil when ‘youths’ cannot be named due to their age, but one 17 year old has been charged with burglary. His lawyer described him as ‘someone with promise and who was studying to be a sound engineer. This was a moment of madness.’ A moment of madness? Really? Because, from where I’m standing, it was more like twelve hours of madness.

The most stupid so far?

The man who was arrested for stealing a bottle of wine from Somerfields Supermarket with a street value of probably no more than £3.99! And two sisters for stealing bubble gum from a newsagents.

I think David Cameron, who returned home from his holiday yesterday, said it best. “For too long there has been a lack of focus on the complete lack of respect shown by these thugs. I’m clear they are no way representative of the vast majority of young people who despise them as much as the rest of us do. But there are pockets of our society that are not just broken – they are sick. When you see children as young as 12 and 13 looting and laughing, and when we see the disgusting sight of an injured young man with people pretending to help him while they are in fact robbing him, it is clear there are things that are badly wrong in our society.”

So, have you seen the images? Have you watched the news reports? What do you think of what’s been happening in London and England in the past few days? Do you agree with what some of the rioters argue? Let me know.
